With its permanent exhibition “Wilderness with a Sea View” housed in Zrinski Castle, Brod na Kupi, the Rijeka Natural History Museum presents to visitors the natural heritage of Gorski Kotar – from Kupa valley and the karst underground, including the most significant forest communities, mountains above the forest line, all the way up to the sky and the clouds. The exhibition shows the characteristics, interesting facts and special features of the nature of Gorski Kotar, as well as the elements of the traditional coexistence of man and nature in this area. The highly atmospheric display enables visitors to peek into the tiny world of mosses and lichens, visit the cold and dark sink hole, explore the mine, feel the extreme weather conditions on the mountain, have a go at climbing the artificial boulder while discovering hidden exhibits, or even have a live encounter with birds or snakes. The ground floor of Zrinski Castle houses “The Routes of the Frankopans Interpretation Centre, Brod na Kupi”. Both the permanent exhibition and the interpretation centre represent an extraordinary tourist attraction in the castle dating back to the 17th century, situated right at the border with Slovenia.

Croatian History Museum - Ivan Goran Kovačić Memorial Museum

The birth house of Ivan Goran Kovačić (1913 - 1943), a prominent Croatian poet, writer, journalist and anti-fascist fighter, hosts a permanent display reflecting his life and work.

The three-storey stone house of civil design was built by the poet's grandfather in 1905.

The permanent display of the Museum is divided into five thematic units. The “Goran and Lukovdol” unit is a reconstruction of the ambience of Goran's room and objects related to his schooling. The central room with the reconstruction of the poet's workspace and personal library is dedicated to the unit “Goran, the Writer and Journalist”. This is followed with an account of Goran's life among the partisans, his most famous work “Jama” (The Pit) and the poet's unsolved murder. “Goran's Homeland” is the name of the unit dedicated to the history and culture of Gorski kotar, especially Lukovdol, which was Kovačić's “everlasting love” and literary inspiration. The “Goran's Spring” unit is represented by photographs and documents from the poetry event of the same name that has been held in Lukovdol since 1964, and a selection of books - editions of the writer’s works from 1945 to 2003.

The Routes of the Frankopans – Brod na Kupi and Čabar

The cultural and tourist route “The Routes of the Frankopans” comprises seventeen castles, two of which are located in Gorski Kotar – in Čabar and Brod na Kupi. In Čabar, the Centre tells the story of how the Frankopan and Zrinski families successfully ran the estate, whereas in Brod na Kupi, the Centre show the relationship that the Frankopan and Zrinski families had with nature. The Frankopans took part in many battles, and their resourcefulness, education, diplomacy and, above all, their determination to preserve their estates, kept the family strong for centuries. They left behind them numerous castles, fortified towns and mansions, scattered across Primorje-Gorski Kotar County, which invoke the spirit of the past, intrigue, conflict, culture, literacy and religiousness. Due to their exceptional value, and for the purpose of restoration, preservation, protection and sustainable use of tangible and intangible heritage, the project “The Routes of the Frankopans” was launched.
